The BIG Question & How I Changed My Life, Part II

Coaching And NLP Helped Me Change My Life

I watched a documentary last week that really struck a chord. It put into perspective some of what I’ve gone through in my life, and what I know a lot of people are going through right now. I call it the adulthood crisis.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, stalled, or lost in life, if you’ve ever asked yourself “what am I doing with my life?” you’ll probably identify with this.

I believe the adulthood crisis stems partly from our conscious or unconscious efforts to fight adulthood and everything we think it involves.

Once thought to end at about 18 years of age, now many men are women all over the world are extending  adolescence into the 30s and 40s

And I don’t blame us. I believe it’s the fault of a society in which we’ve let many important rites of passage disappear, leaving us adrift and lost, unsure of ourselves, our identity, our roles, and our direction in life.

Across time, different cultures have understood that without clear markers on the journey to adulthood, we’ve a difficult time making the transition and can drift along indefinitely

The rites of passage used to be clearly delineated in nearly every culture as one of the community’s most important rituals.

The common thread was an experience that often involved emotional and sometimes physical pain (I’m not advocating pain of any kind by the way), alone reflection, and required adolescents to pass the test of adulthood: to show courage, endurance, resilience, the ability to control one’s emotions, and to claim their role as a mature human being.

In ancient tribes a teenager used to have the support of an entire tribe as they underwent an elaborate rite of passage that took them from childhood into adulthood.

Now, before they even take the leaving cert, teenagers are supposed to have figured out what they want to do for the rest of their life. At 18 or 21, many get a party and an overpriced gift, and off they go. Now they’re adults, even though many will continue to live with their parents, and some off their parents, well into their twenties or thirties.

Things have become a little messed up I think, and so our brains are a little messed up too. And when our brain’s messed up, our life’s messed up (and vice versa).

It’s no surprise suicide is the 3rd cause of death for young people between 10 and 24 years of age

There’s a palpable sense of isolation, disconnect, selfishness… that often happens when we’ve no aim or mission in life, when we’ve no sense of stability or direction. When we don’t feel supported. I see this in the teenagers, young adults, and not so young adults I coach. I once felt just like this myself.

The truth is, a lot of us have been very well prepared intellectually; we can sit down for hours, absorb information, and pass tests. But we haven’t been prepared for life in the here and now.

Our minds have been trained to a certain extent and in certain aspects, but our bodies, soul, and spirit have been neglected.

Many years ago, after much heartache, I luckily realized this and took it upon myself to re-train my brain, body, soul, and spirit.

I learnt to get in touch with my intuition, to develop a sense of perspective, to have mental clarity, to stay grounded and centered in the face of adversity, to be more courageous.

I also learnt to love myself unconditionally, and to love and connect with other people, I found my mission and direction in life, and built up a sense of confidence and self-assurance that’s like a tree in a storm, you can bend it but you can’t break it.

This, with time and effort, can be achieved. Now I help teenagers, young adults, and not so young adults, to make this essential transition too.

It’s how I changed my life around, and how you can change yours too. Without this, many people will continue to drift in life asking themselves, “what am I doing with my life?”.
