How To Eat Carbs And Lose Weight

Coaching and NLP To Lose WeightCarbohydrates have got a bad reputation when it comes to weight loss.

“No carbs till Marbs” and “Carbs are the devil” are just some of the things we hear day in and day out, and diets such as Atkins haven’t helped things…

When it comes to shedding body fat fast a lot of people resort to the no carb approach, and it works, temporarily anyway. But what most people are still unaware of is that they can eat carbs and lose weight. In fact, they should eat carbs to lose weight and keep it off long term.

Yes, really!

See, here’s what’s happened…

Over years and years of consuming a diet full of processed carbohydrates a lot of people have grown extremely insensitive to one of the most important hormones in our body. This key hormone can either help you achieve your ideal shape and size, or it can keep you overweight no matter how hard you try to fight it.

Insulin helps your body keep blood sugar at bay, by clearing it quickly from your bloodstream after a carbohydrate rich meal, and sending those carbs to be stored in muscle tissue to be used as energy.

However, thanks to diets packed with insulin and blood sugar spiking carbohydrates, a lot of people are suffering from some level of insulin resistance, a condition in which insulin is no longer able to efficiently remove blood sugar from the blood stream to be used as energy, so it ends up as body fat.

As a result more and more people are getting bigger and bigger, and finding it harder and harder to lose weight.

On top of this insulin resistance can  lead to type II diabetes and an array of other horrible physical and mental health problems.

So what can we do about this, and how can we continue to enjoy carbs and lose weight too?

We could go completely low-carb for an extended period of time in an attempt to repair our insulin receptors and increase insulin sensitivity. But most people would rather die that go low-carb long term.  And then we’d have to reintroduce carbohydrates back in to our diet very slowly and carefully to avoid piling on the pounds as quickly as we dropped them.

So follow this advice instead and have your cake and eat it too (well, not quite!):

1. Choose wheat and gluten free carbohydrate sources, such as sweet potato, brown rice pasta, brown rice, wheat&gluten free bread. When our body is highly sensitive to insulin, only a small amount of insulin is necessary to effectively and efficiently clear sugar from the blood to its storage sites. Our body has an incredibly difficult time burning fat in the presence of insulin, so the less insulin we have floating around, the better. Vegetables and berries are carbohydrates too by the way, and cause minimum insulin release so tuck in!

2. Eat your carbs after a tough workout, preferably consisting of weight lifting, metabolic resistance or interval training. Carbs such as sweet potato, brown rice, and brown rice pasta are perfect after a workout, as long as you don’t overdo it, they will go straight to your muscles  to be used as energy.

3. Cinnamon your carbs. Cinnamon has been proven to assist in managing blood sugar after a carbohydrate rich meal while increasing glucose metabolism by up to 10 fold! Have you tried sweet potato fries with cinnamon yet? Yum!

4. Cook with Turmeric.  Turmeric is a spice that has been shown to increase carb uptake by lean muscle for energy, as opposed to being stored as fat. Add it to curries, stir fries and salads for a spot of colour and tons of flavour.

5. Fenugreek your tea! 4-hydroxyisoleucine, a natural phytochemical extracted from the Fenugreek herb, has been scientifically shown to increase carbohydrate storage in muscle cells while decreasing carbohydrate fat storage.

6. Supplement your R-ALA ding dong! R-Alpha Lipoic Acid is a naturally occurring fatty acid made up of two isomers, S-ALA and R-ALA, of which the R isomer has been shown to be significantly more effective and bioavailable. In fact R-ALA is clinically proven to increase insulin sensitivity by an impressive 25% in just 4 weeks and is so powerful at managing blood sugar that it’s even used by German doctors for the treatment of diabetic neuropathies.

So, no you can’t eat cake every day if you want to be slim, but you can eat a bit of what you fancy as long as you follow the rules above, and your waistline measurements will start to go down instead of up!
