1. I was born in the Basque Country, northern Spain, and yes I consider myself Basque
  2. I was meant to be a boy called David
  3. I’ve suffered from asthma and allergies my whole life. As a kid, I’d get asthma attacks during the night and dad had to rush me to hospital at 5am to get me pumped with oxygen, within 10 minutes I’d be high as a kite but had to go back to bed and wake up for school the following morning as if nothing had happened
  4. I’m a frustrated athlete. I’ve never been great at sports but have loved them my whole life, specially athletics and weight lifting. I started going to the gym aged 12. After school, I used to grab my bike and ride 30k through the mountains to the beach and back, on my own, in sweltering heat pretending I was an athlete
  5. My best friends are my 2 sisters and my brother. We just get each other and speak pretty much every day. We share a rather sarcastic and dark sense of humour other people often don’t get. My other 3 best friends, all guys, have all died within the past few years
  6. I lost all my girlfriends on a school trip to Barcelona aged 12. I went exploring on my own and found a rock bar I took a liking to so I decided to stay and make some new friends. My teachers and school friends looked for me for hours. I turned up in the middle of the night to the sight of angry faces. The girls never spoke to me again. The boys did. Since then, I’ve always got on better with men
  7. As kids, my cousin Chisco and I used to grow Marihuana in his mum’s garden. We asked my naive aunt to make sure she watered it for us regularly as it was a science experiment for school
  8. At 16 I joined a rock band. I was the only girl and younger than all the boys by a few years. I had to take them home to meet and get approval from my parents. I sang and played the electric guitar. We performed live and recorded a demo tape. We were called Double Or Quits. Two years later, we quit
  9. My first relationship was extremely unhealthy. I didn’t know it at the time but now I know I was psychologically abused to say the least, which made me think I was fat and stupid, and I fell into the anorexia trap
  10. The longest I went without any food was a whole 7 days. One night, weighing 45kgs, I couldn’t sleep from hunger and suddenly thought I was going to have a heart attack. I had a panic attack and rushed to the kitchen, reached for the sugar bowl and started eating tablespoonfuls of the white stuff. That was my turnaround day
  11. I started drinking when I was 13 years old and by 18 I became teetotal, and a vegetarian. I started drinking and eating meat again when I was 29
  12. At college I studied Basque, English, French and Russian. I love languages and was an A student. After 4 years, I quit just before my graduation exams. I was too physically weak and mentally messed up to even walk a flight of stairs, let alone study
  13. At 22 I couldn’t wait to get as far away from the extremely negative environment at home and in my relationship as I possibly could. I had been working cleaning offices to save up to leave. I bought a plane ticket to Ireland, which was as far as I could afford to go, and left home for good
  14. At 24 I followed my new boyfriend to Australia. As soon as we got there he left me for someone else. I stopped eating and over exercising again, and smoking cigars. I had no money and no visa. I worked illegally cleaning a mansion to save up enough cash to be able to come back to Ireland
  15. At 26 I lost a baby. For years I didn’t tell anyone but one person
  16. I worked as an English teacher, a Spanish teacher, a nail technician, a cleaner, a waitress, a hotel receptionist, a travel agent, a customer service agent, a project co-ordinator for an engineering firm… before I decided to become a fitness trainer
  17. When I took my fitness course, at a Strength & Conditioning class, I took my T-shirt off to show my hard earned six-pack. My teacher looked skinny and like he had never lifted a weight in his life. I quit the course
  18. I have, on more than one occasion, borrowed money from a friend to be able to eat that day
  19. I met my now husband in the gym where I worked. He used to come to my Pilates classes! Then he started working in “my” gym. I didn’t like him a bit, I thought he was arrogant
  20. If it wasn’t for him I would not be a coach now. He unexpectedly broke up with me, for a whole year, and I finally realized I needed to focus on myself and develop myself as a person so I took an NLP course and it all snowballed from there
  21. The most influential people in my life so far have been my husband John, my family, Brian Colbert and Owen Fitzpatrick (of the Irish Institute of NLP), my deceased friends, and my pet snail Bobbi, who keeps me childlike
  22. I love what I do and my clients are more than clients to me, I care about them and like to keep them close
  23. What I like about myself the most is my ability to make people laugh by making a fool of myself
  24. My biggest fear is to live an ordinary life
  25. At the end of my life my biggest accomplishment will have been to have been courageous enough to have stayed true to myself and to others

PS:I didn’t post this for you to feel sorry or wowed, or to do the whole rags to riches story… that’s not my thing at all. I just wanted to share a little bit of me with you. So, tell me something I didn’t know about you?
