12 Signs You Are Stressed Out

Coaching l NLP Life Coach l Confidence l Motivation l StressDid you know that the Amygdalae, greek for “almonds”, located deep within the medial temporal lobes of the brain, are in charge of sensing imminent danger?

The Amygdalae help to initiate the body’s fight-or-flight response to stress.

When we are in “fight-or-flight” mode, when we feel we are under stress, our body releases adrenaline and the “stress hormone” cortisol.

Cortisol diverts blood away from our digestive tract, leaving us less able to digest food or absorb nutrients, and more likely to gain weight.

In this physiological “crisis mode,” we’re more vulnerable to pain from chronic illness, arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines, stomach upset, and more.

And in this state of heightened physiological “alert”, our brain’s creative center is deemed “non-essential” and shuts down, lowering our problem solving skills, creativity, and intuition.

Stress affects our sleep too. As a consequence, our body secretes even more cortisol, wreaking more havoc on digestion (and waist line), increasing our blood pressure and lowering our immune system.

After releasing too much cortisol for too long, our body goes into “adrenal fatigue” mode, where we consistently feel depleted, exhausted, and depressed. Know anyone like that?

  2. Hi Sharon,

Wow, 10 is a lot! One thing you can start to do to help you de-stress is take magnesium oil. A few sprays (about 6 on each arm) of this natural mineral on your forearms about 30 mins before going to sleep at night will help your muscles and brain relax and you will get better quality sleep, which will in turn affect everything else from digestion, to mood, to concentration. Most of us are deficient in this mineral due to modern life stresses and the fact that it’s pretty much impossible to get it through nutrition alone these days. In a few days you should notice the difference in terms of how well you sleep, how bright you wake up, and how much more relaxed you feel… Check out http://www.magnesium.ie and get Ancient Minerals Transdermal Magnesium Oil. You can also use it on your body during the day to help you relax by the way.

Ouch..12! Recognising that my body's starting to crumble a bit because of extreme stress though and taking steps to try and ameliorate the situation. Bit scary to get to the point of owning all 12 though..

  4. Hi Gráinne, if it's of any consolation, most people will tick between 9 to 12 of the symptoms. However, awareness is the first step towards making the necessary changes, so keep taking steps to feel more relaxed more of the time 🙂
